Attorney General KK Venugopal stated today at the Supreme Court bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi that spat between the top CBI officers Alok Verma and Rakesh Asthana impacted the image of the CBI in front of the country.
He said that the centre stepped into this matter so that the confidence of the public on the premier investigation agency (CBI) gets restored.
“They were fighting like Kilkenny cats,” Venugopal said. He also added that it was necessary for the Centre to look into this fight which went into public since the Government of India was surprised as to what the top officers were doing.
The Supreme court on Nov 29, had said that it would first hear whether the government could have deprive CBI chief from his duties or prior to moving against Verma it should have approached the Selection Committee headed by the Prime Minister of India.
